Bible Reading for April 4 (ONPP)
Judges 1 – 3, Proverbs 14
Judges 1 – Joshua passed away and Israel is continuing to take the land that God told them. However they are not driving out or killing all the inhabitants as God told them. Thus the inhabitants of Canaan are keeping their false gods and Israel is being exposed and influenced by them.
Judges 1:10 – Hebron was have to previously been conquered by Caleb who was a son of Judah. This may be a retelling of the events. Hebron was also a city of refuge given to the Levites.
Judges 1:11 – Debir was one of the cities given to the Levites but not a refuge city.
Judges 1:17 – Hormah was a city for Simeon that was taken out if Judah.
Judges 1:18 – These three Gaza, Askelon, and Ekron were given to Judah.
Judges 1:22 – Bethel was given to Benjamin.
Judges 2:1 – Again God affirms his immutability (unchanging character and mind).
Judges 2:2 – The command of God to utterly destroy those in Canaan as described in Deuteronomy 20:16–18, Exodus 23:32–23, Exodus 34:12–13, Numbers 33:52, Deuteronomy 7:16, Deuteronomy 7:2–5, and Deuteronomy 12:2–3 was disobeyed. How many times does God need to remind them? We are unjust and unrighteous we must continually be reminded of our failing or our pride in ourselves will overtake us. It is a good thing that God in all His foresight provided a propitiation for or sin in the sacrifice of His only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ.
Judges 2:3 – This is repeated from Numbers 33:55. The commands were repeated many times but the sentence is given only once.
Judges 2:10 – Did the people serve Jehovah all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua? Were they not to teach their children about Jehovah and about the exodus from Egypt and all that God had done for them?
Judges 2:11 – They did not destroy all that breathed in the cities that they captured thus keeping alive the worship of false gods.
Judges 2:12 – This did not surprise God. He told Moses it would happen in Deuteronomy 31:16.
Judges 2:18 – God loves Israel because of His choice of Israel to lead to the salvation of mankind.
Judges 2:21 – God proclaimed Joshua responsible for the nations that were left in Canaan because he was the one in charge.
Judges 2:22 – This is not temptation that God is leading them toward. This is a test of their commitment to Him because of their actions.
Judges 3:1 – Those nations were there to bear witness of Israel’s faithfulness to God whether it would be true or turned away.
Judges 3:6 – It did not take long for temptation to be followed.
Judges 3:8 – This is the first of the retributions that Israel must go through for their sin. Disobeying God by leaving those among them that they took the land from resulted in them forsaking Jehovah.
Judges 3:12 – This is the second of the retributions that Israel must go through for their sin.
Judges 3:31 – Evidently another part of Israel must pay retributions making a third time before they were again to turn back to God.
Proverbs 14:1 – Solomon again refers to a woman when talking about wisdom and foolishness.
Proverbs 14:6 – The cross is foolishness to the unbeliever but precious to the Christian!
Proverbs 14:12 – The Prophecy of Deuteronomy 12:8 or the warning of Deuteronomy 13:18 or their actions in Judges 17:6 or Judges 21:25 about men doing what was right in their own eyes preceded attacks and loses of freedoms. But if they had done as in II Kings 10:30 where they had done what was right in God’s eyes, they prospered.
Proverbs 14:14 – When a man is filling his life with his own ways he has no room for God. He will do anything to continue filling himself, even pretending to be upright and honest. When a man is satisfied with what God has made of him he is satisfied in himself.
Proverbs 14:20–21 – Wicked people are only after worldly gain and have no love for people that are not able to provide it. The poor have many that are against them because they cannot provide what the many want.
Pro 14:29 – The latter sound like me. Knowing that I can try to subdue myself but I will need the Lord’s assistance (grace and mercy).
Proverbs 14:31 You can be known who you are by your actions as a tree can be known by its fruit.

Proverbs 14:34 – America was great because America was good. Titus 1:15 To the pure all things are pure. But to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure, but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
