Bible Reading for May 12 (ONPP)
I Kings 16 – 18, Psalms 112
I Kings 16:12 – The prophecies of God’s prophet will always come true.
I Kings 16:27 – If Omri was so bad to do all that Jeroboam did why didn’t God pronounce the same sentence upon him? Was it because he did not kill his predecessor but was chosen by the people? If so does that mean that the people will receive another evil king?
I Kings 17:1 – This is the first time we hear from Elijah which means – “God of Jehovah”
I Kings 17:6 – Where did the ravens get the bread and meat? Did they take them form someone or did God provide them.
I Kings 17:7 – It is natural for a stream to dry up in a drought but not for ravens to feed people.
I Kings 17:14 – Evidently there will be a source of food available for people just as the rains begin again.
I Kings 17:24 – This woman was not convinced by the flour and oil being continually available. Where were her eyes? Does it always take someone to be raised from death for people to believe?
I Kings 18:1 – Over two years without rain. And yet the widow’s oil and flower have not run out.
I Kings 18:4 – Obadiah is being God’s raven.
I Kings 18:17 – No Ahab, you are the one that troubles Israel and has set up alters to false gods causing Israel to sin. Yes, I see now, next verse.
I Kings 18:21 – The people fear both Ahab and God just as the Sanhedrin did when Jesus asked them where the baptism of John the Baptist came from man or God. Matthew 21:25.
I Kings 18:30–37 – There is a significance of order in turning to God. First Elijah separated the people from the Baal offering, pulling them away from sin to see God’s power. Elijah repaired the altar, the path to worship and forgiveness, using the way God had set forth when He drew Israel out of Egypt. Elijah set the altar, path, separate and usable by God alone, for He would come down and set the fire for the eyes and hearts of the people to see. Then he prayed for the people to receive the knowledge that Jehovah is God and that their hearts would turn to Him. That significance is also for us now. God calls you out from sin, He has made a path for worship through the sacrifice of Jesus that is able to repair the relationship to God lost by man from Adam’s deliberate sin. And it is God that came down to present Himself as The Son as a sacrifice that only He could make that we may see in our hearts that He is God and is worthy of worship.
I Kings 18:38 – God accepted the sacrifice not just the ox but the wood and stone both were made dust and the water was “burned” away also.
Psalms 113:6 – Earth and people are so small in comparison to the universe, so insignificant, that God takes notice of this part of His creation is amazing to us. If we are that important to God should not other people be important to us also. Should not we be interested in their destination and encourage them to follow God’s plan of redemption.
