Bible Reading for May 18 (ONPP)
II Kings 7 – 9, Psalms 118
II Kings 7:5 – So as the sun set the lepers left the city and came to the Syrian camp for mercy.
II Kings 7:8 – During the night the lepers ate and drank their fill presumably by the light of the fires that the Syrians made before they left.
II Kings 7:10 – As the night continued they repented of their selfishness and went back to the city and told the gatekeeper what they discovered.
II Kings 7:12 – The king was awakened and rebuked the news as a trap for invasion.
II Kings 7:13 – A wise servant brought up a plan to verify the lepers good news.
II Kings 7:15 – Not only did they check out the camp but followed the retreating army’s path to the Jordan River.
II Kings 7:17 – The king put his trusted officer in charge of the gate to guard the people from disorder. Due to the officer’s unbelief of Elisha’s prophecy he was trampled and died. In the same way when we do not believe God and His plan for salvation as in Mark 16:16 –He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.
II Kings 8:1 – God provides this account to show us that when we do believe Him, and follow His Word, He will bless us. In this account also it is possible that the woman’s husband had died because he was old and not mentioned.
II Kings 8:9 – He brought forty camel loads of presents. Does this king think he can buy his health back?
II Kings 8:10 – Notice that Elisha does not say that the disease will kill him. After fighting disease we need to rest our bodies once the disease is gone.
Psalms 118:22 – Jesus was rejected by the Pharisees and Sadducees while David was rejected by Saul and left out in the field by his father.
